Postcards from people affected by flooding in Nigeria’s economic capital.
WE SLEPT IN THE LIVING ROOM FOR WEEKS
Life has not been easy. Even to feed and spend is difficult because we need to repay the loan we borrowed online.
COULDN’T SLEEP, I HAD TO TAKE PILLS
We had to throw a lot of belongings affected by the flood away. I felt completely devastated.
NOBODY IN OUR COMPOUND SLEPT THAT NIGHT
I drew my neighbour’s attention to it and she laughed, thinking it was the usual thing.
WE HAD TO JUMP OVER THE FENCE
Most of my business and all the drugs were damaged, including all the fish.
MY HEIGHT SAVED ME FROM BEING SWEPT AWAY
In my area, once the rain starts, it becomes terrible. We wear rain boots before stepping out.
ALL I’VE WORKED FOR WAS DESTROYED IN ONE NIGHT
When I remember how much effort I put into setting up this shop, it pains me.
MY BIKE GOT STUCK IN THE WATER
The sprocket wears out faster than usual. It can last up to a year, but due to the rain, I have to replace it every few months.
WE LOCK THE SCHOOL FOR SEVERAL DAYS
Whenever there is a flood, we have to lock the school for three to four days.
THE WATER WAS CLOSE TO MY CHEST
Everything was soaked ‑ the chairs, the freezers were all floating.
